Staying Safe PreK-12 Curriculum

Welcome to Purpose Prep’s Staying Safe curriculum. This curriculum is packaged on a grade-by-grade basis for PreK-12 students. Each grade-level course is aligned to SEL competencies and contains instruction on the five Erin’s Law Safety Rules and five Protection Concepts. Each offering and online course contains media-rich instructional videos, discussion questions, and knowledge checks.

Each section contains one Safety & Protection Rule and an alignment to a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competency. While your students engage in their Staying Safe instruction, they are also learning in-depth competencies to develop their social emotional skills. Outlined below are the five Erin’s Law Safety Rules and five Protection Concepts, empowering educators to train students to feel safe, protected, and prepared for physical, emotional, and sexual safety.

Five Protection Concepts

Each Erin’s Law standard includes an instructional lesson video and teaches a new rule that supports personal safety and protection. The instructional videos teach skills, strategies, and resources for staying safe, as well as introduce hypothetical scenarios for meaningful discussion.

Erin’s Law Units & Concepts

What is Erin’s Law?

“Erin’s Law” requires that all public schools in each state implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program which teaches:

  • Students in grades preK – 12th grade, age-appropriate techniques to recognize child sexual abuse and tell a trusted adult
  • School personnel all about child sexual abuse
  • Parents & guardians the warning signs of child sexual abuse, plus needed assistance, referral or resource information to support sexually abused children and their families

Staying Safe

Rule 1: Safety 1st & Protecting Myself

Introduce a new rule for each lesson that supports personal body safety and  value around their personal safety, as well as strategies how to protect themselves.
SEL Alignment: Self-Awareness

Safe vs. Unsafe

Rule 2: Always Ask & Trusting Relationships

Introduce new scenarios and solutions that support students in asking questions and empower their personal responsibility to keep themselves and others safe.

Personal Space

Rule 3: Personal Space & Healthy Decisions

Introduce wanted and unwanted scenarios, specifically in regard to personal space and touching, as well as bring self and social-awareness to physical and verbal red flags.

Practice Speaking Up

Rule 4: “No Secrets:” My Voice & Heart Matters

Introduce the “No Secret” rule and support resources so learners can always ask questions and speak up. Share where to go and not to go, and how to find help.

Practical Tools for Purpose & Hope

Rule 5: Purpose & Hope

Introduce skills and strategies for finding purpose, hope, and peace to overcome life obstacles and move forward, as well as remind students that if things have happened to them, to not place personal blame on themselves.

Each topic above contains 30-45 minutes of instructional content and includes the activities below:

  • Instructional Training Video
  • Prepackaged Assessment Discussion Questions (minimum of 3 for each video)
  • “Check on Learning” Multiple-Choice Quiz/Assignment
